Personal Occasional Writings (16th-19th Century)

A project funded by the German Research Center (DFG) (February 2025-March 2028)

The “personal occasional writings” in the library's digital collections offers access to a collection of occasion-related writings from four centuries, many of which are exclusively held by the SuUB Bremen. The collection of approximately 9500 prints and a few manuscripts from the 16th to 19th centuries mostly originate from Bremen and are each comprised of a few pages. Personal occasional writings were written for various life events including weddings, birthdays, the taking up of office, graduations and even deaths. They were written in Latin, Low and High German, and occasionally in French.

The collection can be searched using various filters. It is possible to search the occasional writings via an index of persons, by genre or calendar date. All title and structural data as well as the full text are searchable. The individual titles are available for free PDF download.

The occasional writings have survived as bookbinding bundles, loose sheets and capsules. We have made them available online as separate works. If you are interested in viewing their original bound format for context, you can also use the shelfmark to display the complete volume (all works belonging to a volume as well as the book cover).
