Medieval Manuscripts In the digital collection "Medieval Manuscripts", we offer free digital access to the valuable and unique holdings of medieval manuscripts preserved at the State and University Library Bremen (SuUB Bremen). All title and structural metadata are fully searchable.
SuUB Bremen holds 124 medieval manuscripts dating from the 9th to the early 16th century. These manuscripts are diverse in terms of provenance, content, textual form, and language. Most originate from the collections of Bremen libraries, although few were actually written in Bremen. They stem from historical collections such as the founding holdings of the Bibliotheca Bremensis (including the private library of Goldast), as well as from the former collections of Bremen Cathedral and the Athenaeum.
The medieval manuscripts in the collection were described in a 2004 catalogue compiled by Irene Stahl, which is available here. A description of two manuscripts from the Kunstsammlungen Böttcherstraße – on permanent loan to SuUB Bremen since 2009 – can be found here.
