The Bremen Papyri Between January and June 2013, the Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Bremen (SuUB) digitised its oldest collection: 84 papyri, along with 3 additional papyri from the Übersee-Museum. These papyri date back to the 2nd century AD and originate from the administrative circle of the chief administrative officer Apollonios . They are among the few surviving sources offering insight into everyday life in Upper Egypt for this period. Acquired in 1902 by Bremen merchant Hermann Melchers, the papyri were transferred to what is now the SuUB Bremen in 1903. The Bremen Papyri were translated and indexed in a 1936 publication by Ulrich Wilcken. Wilcken also assigned new catalogue numbers to the papyri. As a result, each papyrus has two identifiers—for example, P 1 (SuUB Bremen’s current signature) / No. 21 (Wilcken’s designation). Wilcken’s descriptions can be accessed via the links for each papyrus. All information recorded for the Bremen Papyri (titles, descriptions, etc.) is based on Ulrich Wilcken’s publication Die Bremer Papyri.
