Published weekly—at times biweekly—between 1841 and 1922, "Die Grenzboten" was a national liberal journal aiming to reflect the entirety of bourgeois life. From 1871 onward, the subtitle accurately describes its content: "Journal of Politics, Literature and Art." Contributions range from political and historical analyses, economic discussions, to essays on the topic of aesthetics in the arts, music, and literature. The journal provides a vivid and diverse portrait of bourgeois culture during the politically and historically dynamic period of the 19th century.
